IPL 2022: Mayank Agarwal named Punjab Kings captain


Indian Test opener Mayank Agarwal has been named captain of the Punjab Kings for the upcoming Indian Premier League.

Agarwal, the 31-year-old from Bengaluru was one of three players retained by the Punjab Kings alongside young pacer Arshdeep Singh and left arm spinner Harpreet Brar.

“I have been at the Punjab Kings since 2018 and am very proud to represent this fantastic unit. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the team,” Agarwal said in a franchise press release.

“I take this responsibility with the utmost sincerity but at the same time I think my job would be made easier by the talent we have in the Punjab Kings squad this season.”

Agarwal has been an integral part of the Punjab Kings since 2018, served as the team’s vice-captain and also briefly managed the team last season.

“We have very experienced players in our ranks, as well as many talented youngsters who want to seize the opportunity and run with it.

“We have always taken to the field hoping to win the title and as a team we will again work towards that goal of lifting our first IPL trophy. I would like to thank the team management for entrusting me with this new role of team leader.

“I look forward to the new season and the new challenges that come with it.” Agarwal, who made his IPL debut in 2011, has totaled over 400 runs over the past two seasons. He also played 19 Tests scoring 1429 runs, including four hundred, and five ODIs for India.

The franchise participated in the recent IPL Mega Auction with the maximum purse and picked up some quality players and hope to win their first title in the cash-rich tournament this time.
